A FATHER’S DAY IN SWEDEN

Stockholm, Sweden 🇸🇪

Matthew 6:8 NLT
Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him!

As of the time of this writing, I have been to Sweden 3 times. The first time I visited Stockholm, I had no idea how deeply these trips would impact my faith, but it wasn’t until my second time, during a work trip out in Lidkoping; that I remember sitting in a small Sunday service, not understanding much of the language, but feeling the unmistakable presence of God fill the room as we broke bread together. It happened to be Father’s Day in Sweden, and even though I was far from home, I felt surrounded by a reminder of the Father’s love that transcends culture, language, and place. That day sparked a journey of seeing God not only as Creator and Savior but as a loving Father who knows me completely and calls me His own. It’s really special seeing this shared love of the Father across the globe.

We reflected on Matthew 6, and one theme stood out, the presence of the Father. In just 18 verses, “Father” appears 10 times! This repetition reminds me that our relationship with God is uniquely personal and close. Yet, “Father” is a complex word for many. It can bring up emotions like shame, loneliness, or hurt. Sometimes the idea of having a Father who knows my every need and sees what I do in secret can seem simultaneously frightening and implausible, until I examine the Bible (His Word) a little more.

My Father’s Word says that:

  1. I am made in His image (Genesis 1:27).
  1. He designed every part of me and also knows everything about my past and my future (Psalm 139:13–16).
  1. Even though He knows all of my sins, He still loves me and sent Jesus to take my punishment (Romans 5:8).
  1. He is merciful toward me, and I have been saved by His grace through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:4–7).
  1. He claimed me as His child (1 John 3:1).
  1. His faithfulness has no end (Psalm 100:5).
  1. His love for me endures forever (Psalm 136:23–26).

SO GOOD!

On my next visit to Sweden since then, I’ve been reminded of how God meets us in new ways wherever we go. Whether it’s sharing a meal with new believers, walking through quiet streets, or worshiping in a church where I don’t know a single word, there’s a peace in knowing His presence remains constant. I’ve grown to see that faith isn’t confined to the familiar but rather it expands when we step out and experience His love through His people all around the world.

Sweden has become a place that reminds me of the beauty of belonging and not just to a place or a moment, but to a Father whose love knows no borders.

Closing

With this understanding, the idea of a Father who knows my needs isn’t frightening, it’s freeing. I am blessed to have an earthly father whom I love so much and raised me in alignment with the Scriptures, but I also have a Heavenly Father who loves me and has given me the incredible gift of salvation (Ephesians 2:8–9). My Heavenly Father also loves my earthly parents the same way. We are children of God, loved by a good Father who knows exactly what we need even before we ask (Matthew 6:8).

Jesus is KING!

As you reflect this week, ask yourself:

Viewing God as a good Father requires trusting in His love for us.

Which aspect of God’s love do you find hardest to fully trust and accept? And who in your life might you need to talk to this week to start a path toward forgiveness?
